It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the 10th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity (ISBNPA) in Melbourne. The theme of the 2011 meeting 'Promoting healthy eating and physical activity: The latest international research' clearly states what ISBNPA is all about. It is to create an international arena in order to stimulate, promote and advocate innovative research and policy related to healthy eating and physical activity.
Supported by our journal, the International Journal of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity (IJBNPA), the annual meetings are the main vehicle for creating such an arena. Over the past decade the meetings have grown from about 200 members to now attracting about 600 participants from more than 30 nationalities from all continents of the world. The international perspective on models and interventions is a key asset of the society. The journal has within few years excelled to become one of the leading journals in the field. This last year it obtained an official impact factor of impressive 2.63. Congratulations to the editorial team!
The day-to-day running of the society, as well as the planning and hosting of the annual meetings has up to now relied almost exclusively on voluntary efforts by dedicated and capable members. An enormous amount of time and effort has been put into the society over the past decade in order to help shape it into the society we see today. Serving on various committees or supporting the journal takes time and commitment and comes on top of all the other task and commitments we all encounter in an already hectic work day. It does, however, also provide for excellent networking possibilities, skills learning and most of all, lots of fun working with enthusiastic and dedicated colleagues.
In order to further develop the society and to secure continuity over time, the executive committee has seen the need for professional assistance. We are therefore happy to have signed a contract with Pam Rolfes and The Odyssey Group, a Minnesota based company that assisted us during the 2010 annual meeting in Minneapolis. Pam is present during the Melbourne meeting, and she is happy to talk to you about ways you can get involved with the society.
The 10th anniversary of the society provides a great opportunity for looking back and reviewing what we have achieved during this past decade, as well as setting goals for the years to come. We encourage you all to attend the Member's meeting taking place over lunch on Thursday 16th June and to take part in this discussion.
The local organising committee headed by David Crawford has done a fabulous job in preparing for the 10th Annual Meeting. Enjoy the conference!
As the Past-President of ISBNPA I have had the pleasure of being the Program Committee Chair for the 2011 conference in Melbourne. This is a great time to be involved in behavioral nutrition and physical activity. Our work is important and valued. This means that interest is high and attendance at the conference this year will be buoyant even though it is long way to travel for many. The Melbourne meeting reflects the burgeoning interest in our endeavours, with a packed program of posters, oral presentations, symposia, keynote lectures, and debate. In addition, we have excellent pre- and post conference meetings. Thanks to everyone for getting these 'shows on the road'!
One of the joys of being Program Committee Chair is that while I do some of the work, I certainly do not do the real hard stuff! That's left to the local organising committee, led superbly by David Crawford and ably supported by his outstanding team. I would like to say a special thank you to Julie Rankine for her outstanding support and assistance. In addition, Greet Cardon has once again led an excellent Abstract Review Committee with exceptional skill and efficiency at a time of considerable volume of submissions. My thanks to you all!
I can't wait for the conference to get underway and to meet as many of you as I can as we share in the success of ISBNPA in the superb surroundings of Melbourne!
With best wishes,
Program Committee Chair, ISBNPA
